TAURANGA, NEW ZEALAND - On-demand shared transport company, Liftango, has become the official carpool partner for the Wednesday Challenge—an initiative that encourages sustainable transport in Tauranga, New Zealand.
Tauranga is the most car-dependent city in the country. Only 55 per cent of its population uses alternative modes of transport to single-occupancy vehicles, which has a significant impact on their health and wellbeing, as well as the environment.
The Wednesday Challenge is supported by Tauranga City Council, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Association, and involves opting for a different way of commuting each Wednesday, from walking, jogging, cycling, scootering, skateboarding or carpooling, to catching a bus or ferry. Participants can register as a business or organisation, school, neighbourhood or as individuals. And by logging Wednesday journeys, they can earn prizes and unlock rewards.
Liftango will be servicing the carpooling leg of the challenge using their corporate mobility program, ensuring that businesses or individuals can opt for climate-positive carpooling to compete in the challenge.
“We're very happy to be partnering with the Wednesday Challenge. It is a very mindful and scalable solution they have put together. These types of initiatives are easily transferable and can have a big impact with not a lot of effort required by the community,” said Iain MacDougall, Head of New Mobilities at Liftango.
Users will be able to sign up on the Wednesday Challenge website, set up their profile, and connect their Wednesday Challenge App to Liftango to begin logging carpool journeys. By switching to sustainable modes of transport such as carpooling, participants will be reducing congestion on the road and improving their productivity as well as the environment. Liftango’s climate-positive carpooling program also offsets all emissions created from carpool trips through their partnership with Pachama.
“It's not always feasible to travel without using your car. With Liftango, these trips can now become a way of reducing emissions by switching to carpooling. The company has provided us with a sustainable and environmentally conscious way of connecting our Wednesday Challenge participants in a fun and convenient way,” said Heidi Hughes, Project Director of the Wednesday Challenge.
Liftango’s partnership with the Wednesday Challenge will see an efficient and reliable means of carpooling implemented throughout Tauranga, helping communities adopt more sustainable transit solutions.
