At a glance
Staff at Trinity Grammar School are using carpooling to address environmental sustainability. The program helps minimise the number of single vehicle occupancy commuting trips to the site, reducing local traffic congestion and vehicle emissions. Some staff are carpooling with others for the entire home-to-work journey, whereas others are picking up colleagues at local train stations and carpooling the remainder of the journey, using carpool to supplement the existing public transit network. Trinity has also launched a variety of incentives to encourage carpool uptake.
Key features:
- Over 600 staff have access to just 200 car spaces
- 10% of car spaces are now dedicated to carpoolers
- Incentive and reward system results in positive behaviour change
- Liftango offsets CO2 produced by carpooling kilometres through their forestry management partner Pachama
The Problem
Trinity Grammar School is located in a residential area, with on-campus parking augmented by on-street parking in the surrounding area. Peak traffic times create congestion and impact within the community. In addition Trinity also recognised the impact that staff travel has on the environment and wished to reduce this impact through changes in staff travel behaviour.
The Solution
Liftango’s carpooling service matches riders with drivers, reducing demand for parking and helping employees commute sustainably.
Staff are able to be picked up from their home address, a suitable meeting point or one of the train stations nearby the school campus. This approach encourages modeshift through utilisation of both new technology and existing transport networks, and by offering options to commuters provides multiple choices depending on personal situations.
Prime car parks were offered as dedicated car spaces for carpoolers. Liftango’s tech allocates these car parks to carpoolers ensuring that verified carpoolers receive this incentive. In addition, regular carpoolers are rewarded with vouchers and a competitive leaderboard is used to gamify the program.
The convenient app guides drivers to the meeting point to pickup the passenger, then directs them onward to the exact car space that has been allocated by the system. All carpooling activities are automatically recorded by the system, which provides detailed reporting to the program managers.
The Results
- Over 100 vehicles removed from the road
- Over 10% of staff signed up within the first 3 months of the program
- Average carpooling trip distance of 14.5km
- Maximum carpooling trip distance of 45km
Learnings
By partnering with Liftango and leveraging their intuitive carpooling technology, Trinity Grammar is able to simultaneously reduce their environmental impact, reduce parking pressures at the school, and offer their staff incentives for contributing to the school’s strategic plans.
Better yet - for every carpooling kilometre driven Liftango has also offset the equivalent amount of CO2 produced through our forestry management partner Pachama - making it a double win for the environment.
